Our projection mapping class was tasked with creating beautiful integrated visuals for our major's annual mixer in only 2-3 weeks. This year's theme was medieval fantasy, and we needed to match the feeling of grandeur, fun and whimsy to all while learning te principles of projection.

Break Down the barrior
The concept for this piece was to recreate the interior wall of a ruined castle to make the mixer feel like an immersive event. The wall would have 2 separate sides to accommodate the art styles the class was comfortable with. The left side was a full interior wall for 2D animations inside framed windows and magic mirrors, and the other side was a broken section of the wall with a wide open field for 3D animation and to make the room feel vast and open.

The first hurdle was making this a project the whole class of varied grade levels could work on together. To fit this, we chose the "2D & 3D" separated walls approach so each person could work in their preferred medium. Durring this stage the class got to visit the location.

First look at some better lighting
A large part of my contribution was compositing and layering everyones work together for the field scene this included light wrapping color grading and making things loop properly.

Early set up for testing the projection
Once we got into the space we had to set up the projectors and use Touch designer and Kantan mapper to keystone the projections into alignment using 3 different laptops and projectors.

In order to make the camera perspective match i recreated the room and used a human double to put the camera at eye level to get the window to feel as close as possible to real world scale.

The most important part of this filed is by far the flowers, grass, and trees. I tried to approach realism using lots of noise patterns for distribution and multiple types of grass like tall grass short grass, and multiple types of flowers to replicate plant diversity.


All plant assets were downloaded from the provided redshift library and were dropped into a redshift scattering object to make render instances of the plants with randomized scale rotation and slight blowing in the wind.
